Imagine this: every class in the school spending a whole lesson to creatively connect with God in their own language. With the use of lava lamps, hundreds of colourful squares of paper and huge cardboard boxes - this is what happened at our school during Catholic Education Week (CEW).
The theme was Making a Difference Inspired By Jesus with sub-themes of: community, faith, social justice & stewardship. We set up prayer spaces in the chapel to allow the students to connect with God in different ways, based on the CEW themes and inspired by creative ideas from Prayer Spaces in Schools.
Lava Lamps
Surrounded by lava lamps, students were invited to send their thoughts and prayers upward to God as the lava lamp bubbles rose. They also had the option to write a prayer and place it with the lamps.

Hope Blossoms
We connect with the theme of stewardship by giving students the space to reflect inward on their own gifts and talents and to think about how they could use these gifts to help others. The students wrote down their hopes on colourful squares of paper, folded the corners in, and then watched as their hopes 'blossomed' in the water.

Cardboard Home
Students were given the opportunity to connect outwardly with the social justice issue of homelessness. We had photos and stories of street kids scattered around the space with huge cardboard boxes surrounding them. The students were encouraged to read the stories, look at the pictures, feel the cardboard and imagine what it would be like to live on the streets.

Community Tree
Each student at our school is a valuable member of our community. To help student to connect across with our entire school community, we invited them to place their thumbprint on a 'community tree' and to pray for each person in our school community.
